Averil Louise Gilkes has spent her life in
painting and the teaching of art. Her paintings are derived and inspired by the beautiful coastlines, estuaries and landscape of Devon, Cornwall and Wales. Wild gardens are a source of pant, flower and statuary themes to draw upon. Working in watercolour, pastel and acrylic, she has moved through a representational stage to achieving new ways of looking and thinking, so that even ordinary familiar objects reflect a kind of magic, a mood, an intensely personal reaction to the subject. This extending of the imagination develops the though process and leads to new discoveries of ways to interpret the the subject. Thus perceptions are stimulated and encouraged to be both imaginative and adventurous. |
